Updates for your invitations

Thermography (raised-letter printing) was introduced to the graphic arts industry more than 100 years ago.  It is popular for letterhead, envelopes, business cards, wedding invitations, and announcements.  It involves heating resins and ink to create a beautiful raised lettered piece without the expense of engraving.  Invitations printed with thermography are nearly identical to those which are engraved.  Thermography offers a large choice of lettering styles, ink colors and the use of some custom artwork.

Because a heating and cooling process is involved, thermography cannot normally be done on both sides of a paper.  Therefore, if you order a piece and request printing on both sides (such as adding back copy to a tri-fold program or an inside verse on a thank you or informal note), at least one side will have to be flat printed.

Photographs are generally not thermographed but are instead printed in flat ink.

Flat Printing is, as the name implies, flat to the surface of the card.  Flat printing is used on items printed in full color.  Flat printing is also used on most holiday cards as well as items requiring printing on both sides of the paper.  Most items containing a photograph are flat printed.

Foil Stamping is an effect achieved when colored foil is hot-stamped onto paper or accessory items, such as napkins.  Many holiday cards will have a design pre stamped on to them in foil (such as the front decoration)

Embossing is a printing method where an image is pressed into paper resulting in a raised design. An ink or foil is sometimes applied on the raised area to add drama and dimension.  Blind embossing is also widely used (meaning no ink just raised design only).

Engraving is a process that has largely been replaced by thermography.

Digital printing is a method of printing using digital techniques in which the data and images are printed directly from a computer onto paper, sticker, canvas, backlit, and other substrate.
